World Food Safety Day 2021

Food safety is an important public health issue and a fundamental element of good health and sustainable development. In the WHO European Region, it is estimated that every year, more than 23 million people fall ill from eating contaminated food and over 4600 people die.

World Food Safety Day on 7 June draws attention and inspires action to help prevent, detect and manage food safety risks in order to promote the availability of safe and healthy food for all. This year’s theme is “Safe food now for a healthy tomorrow”, stressing that the production and consumption of safe food have immediate and long-term benefits for people, the planet and the economy.

Through World Food Safety Day, WHO pursues its efforts to mainstream food safety in the public agenda and engages all actors across the food chain – from production to consumption – to promote food safety awareness and take concrete action to reduce the burden of foodborne diseases. “Safe food now for a healthy tomorrow” calls for action by governments, businesses, consumers and others involved in food systems to promote food safety and to do what it takes to make food safe.
